Frozen Lake at Sunset Textile Art By Jane Spencer
An original textile art piece. Wet felted with free motion machine embroidery
Mounted onto a canvas box frame
This art was inspired by the incredible Swedish Sunsets in the snö that I had the privilege of seeing when I lived on the edge of a lake in Sweden for a while. This sunset – an afternoon in February on the frozen lake was particularly beautiful.
To make this the picture was wet felted using dyed merino wool. To wet felt, fine layers of wool fibre are overlapped. Agitating with hot, soapy water loosens the scales of each fibre. It is then rolled (and rolled and rolled and then agitated some more then rolled some more – it really is a long slow process) until the fibres ‘felt’ into a wool fabric. Some detail in the trees was needlefelted – using a barbed needle to add curly sheep locks.
Fine detail was added with free motion machine embroidery – this is literally drawing with a sewing machine and cotton
Actual felted piece at widest and highest points 47cm cm x 38cm (irregular shape)
Sewn and micro tagged on to a box cotton canvas (380g) splashed with inktense inks – approx 50cm x 60cm
